Europe Braces for Trump's Protectionist Agenda, Urges "Europe First" Policy

US President-Elect, Donald Trump

As Donald Trump prepares to take office for a second term, European business leaders are sounding the alarm and urging policymakers to adopt a "Europe First" policy to counter Trump's protectionist agenda. With the U.S. presidential inauguration just two months away, European executives are frantically lobbying Brussels to increase investment in key areas like defense, technology, and green energy.

The prospect of a second Trump presidency has galvanized the European business community, with hundreds of corporate chiefs and lobby groups gathering in Paris to discuss the threat. They describe Trump's election as a "wake-up call" for Europe to get its house in order and avoid a painful economic fallout. Patrick Martin, president of Medef, France's largest business trade group, warned that "Europe has two months to get ready. After that, there will be a shock."

European leaders are now rallying behind a report by Mario Draghi, former president of the European Central Bank, which urges Europe to increase public investment by nearly $900 billion a year in sectors like technology and defense. Italy's foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, revealed that several European counterparts have agreed to move ahead with issuing new European Union bonds to finance such spending.

The push for a "Europe First" policy is not just about protectionism, but also about strengthening Europe's competitiveness. Executives believe that Trump's presidency could be the catalyst for Europe to create a single market for capital, a shift that has long been elusive.

As Europe prepares for the potential economic fallout of Trump's presidency, leaders are urging unity and a proactive approach. Prime Minister Michel Barnier of France emphasized the need for a "European awakening," saying, "We have been fairly naïve. Today, we need to start saying, 'Europe First.'"
