WHAT HAPPENED

Joseph Onoja netted a brace as Rivers United secured with a comfortable 2-0 win against Shooting Stars on matchday 17 of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League tie played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka on Sunday.


Onoja opened the scoring early with a super finish from before sealing victory in the 25th minute when he powered home with a half-volley flick from Cameroon import Denis Ndasi.

Sunday’s result moves Rivers United to 38 points after 17 games as technical manager Stanley Eguma’s side stays top on the log.

“It was a good outing once again scoring two goals. It wasn't an easy one. We dominated the game, especially in the first half. We did a lot of pressing to get us those early goals in the game and that's how we planned it"- Coach Stanley Eguma said 


MATCH SUMMARY

Joseph Onoja gave the Pride of Rivers an early lead with a well-worked team goal.


The mercurial midfielder collected the ball on the left-hand side following a nice move from Chiamaka Madu before cutting inside and curling past Shooting Stars goalkeeper Dare Dede.


Rivers United doubled their lead in the 25th minute when rock solid defender Denis Ndasi's flick from a cross found Joseph Onoja who wasted no time to power home a half volley. 


Coach Stanley Eguma’s side continued to dominate for the remainder of the first half. A more resilient Shooting Stars side returned after the break but battled for periods of the 45 minutes just as they seemed to have United rattled as Fabian Nworie and Denis Ndasi reacted to challenges – the game slipped away.

The Lagos State Football Association board has swiftly acted to address a blemish on the otherwise impeccable organization of the 2025 President Federation Cup finals, which took place last Saturday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
