Johnson's Death Shocks NWFL Chairperson Falode

The Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League, Aisha Falode, has expressed shock over the sudden death of one of the top players in the NWFL Premiership League, Elizabeth Johnson, who was until her death on Saturday, the first choice goalkeeper of Sunshine Queens of Akure.

Falode said at the weekend in Lagos that: "The late Elizabeth, was a legend of the gender game, as she stood like a wall that waded off attackers dangerous onslaughts at Sunshine Queens of Akure goal post in the NWFL League and Women's FA Cup for many years. Her contributions ensured the qualification of Sunshine Queens of Akure for two NWFL Premiership Super Six, in the last five seasons, in Lagos and Ijebu Ode, a feat that made the Akure club one of the best women's football clubs in Nigeria since 2017 when I took over as the Chairperson of the NWFL.

"Elizabeth Johnson, in several ways contributed to the progressive development and success story of the NWFL. A development that has made the Nigerian Women's league the best in the African continent.

"Johnson was a marvel to watch at the last edition of NWFL Premiership Super Six in Ijebu Ode, where she showed to the world that, her big size wasn't a hindrance to great goalkeeping excellence, as she helped Sunshine Queens contested for the league title until last game of the competition.

Falode, who is also an executive board member of the Nigeria Football Federation, said: "The NWFL and indeed Women's football in Nigeria will miss Elizabeth Johnson.

"My condolences go to Sunshine Queens of Akure, the Ondo State Government, the family of the late Elizabeth Johnson, and indeed the generality of Nigeria Women footballers.

May the soul of the departed one rest in peace. Amen."
