The NWFL Premiership season resumes amidst goals galore in centers across the country and a lot of expectations are hung on the shoulders of clubs in the league- big teams especially as the tickets for the Super Six are at stake for all clubs, Edo Queens inclusive.
This piece is however centered around Edo Queens' journey so far in the 2021/2022 season. Let's flashback a bit before talking about this season.
2020/2021 season was going to be the season when Edo Queens would be seen contest for the Premiership title after gaining the ticket as a result of finishing fourth behind Bayelsa Queens, Rivers Angels, and Nasarawa Amazons. Hopes were high with Coach Osaze Stanley drafted in to tinker the team after Coach Rowlandson Odeh was placed on suspension in what the management tagged an administrative decision. Coach 'Seyi' as Stanley Osaze is widely known was poised for success holding to his resume. He had understudy top-class coaches (Stephen Keshi of blessed memory) during his spell with the Hawks of Togo and has to his CV UEFA license B certificate. No doubt, Coach Seyi is a well-respected coach who has proved his mettle in assignments and that informed the management to hand over the team to him, going into the Super Six in Ijebu Ode. Coach Stanley demonstrated character and he put up fine tactics to outsmart opponents, but for unknown factors, the team performed abysmally at the tournament with no point recorded in five games.
The management felt disappointed and there was a need to make drastic changes if all investment in the team is to come to a meaningful end. A thorough search for a new coach was done and the best on the table - Wemimo Mathew Olanrewaju - emerged as the new Coach of the team.
The Pre-season
With the new sheriff in town, the players are in the know that there would be radical changes in the team as Wemimo is known to be a no-nonsense manager. Few additions were made and training began. There was Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament in place to test new players and to introduce the coach's philosophy.
The Edo Queens faithful supporters have flashed a glimpse of what to expect in the main season at the Betsy Obaseki Women tourney. Players were seen displaying beautiful football artistry, though not well blended, there was hope that as they progress, things would change. How a team that struggled at the Super Six came third in a tournament of top teams in the country with beautiful football played was beginning to become a topic of discussion amongst lovers of the 'Obaseki Girls' - what an ascension!
The fallout of the 2021 Flying Officers Cup in Abuja is not hidden from the world, Edo Queens yet again placed second. A testament that when a quality coach is heading a team, all eyes and brains would appreciate the output - Wemimo Mathew is working.
The Season
Many called it a fluke and were expecting a poor run of form as the main season kick-started in December, but Edo Queens went away to announce their arrival in the league with a convincing 2-0 win over Adamawa Queens in Gombe State. Eyes were beginning to see changes made in the team and a lot started repenting from their initial prophecy of doom. A bleep in-display saw them lose a two-goal lead against Naija Ratels to play 2-2 at full time, no thanks to a defensive error, but that was a blessing in disguise.
Edo Queens have since played four more games and won three including an important away victory over Pelican Stars at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar and a one-all draw at the Confluence Stadium, in Lokoja.
Little to say or have been seen from more the team have in stock as they resume for the long second stanza of the season. So far, Coach Wemimo Mathew has shown that her appointment wasn't a mistake and she's daily putting the best she can into the team to make sure they meet up with the target.
So far, 6 matches, 11 goals; 3 away games, 2 victories, 1 draw, 4 goals scored, 1 goal conceded; 3 home matches, 2 victories, 1 draw, 7 goals scored, 3 goals conceded.
Foreshadowing, six games are left to be played in the regular season and all things being equal, Edo Queens will, with confidence7 march on to the Super Six where another journey starts.
