NPFL 22: Rivers United Overcome Nasarawa United by 2 - 1

WHAT HAPPENED

Nyima Nwagua was the star performer as Rivers United extended their lead on top of the NPFL log to four points after a frantic - yet deeply satisfying - 2-1 win over Nasarawa United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Saturday.

Backed by the sound from the drums and trumpets of the ever-vibrant Rivers United football club supporters club, the Pride of Rivers early onslaught paid off when Nyima Nwagua set up Chijioke Akuneto for the game's opener after 23 minutes. Ishaq Kayode grabbed his 10th goal of the ongoing season and the game's second 17 minutes later but Michael Tochukwu reduced the deficit by 72 minutes.

In the latter stages, the game boiled up into a great league tie. Both sides battered each other with attacks. Rivers United’s incisiveness was crucial but so was the handling of Sochima Victor. Nasarawa United showed why they are one of the top 10 teams in the NPFL but Coach Stanley Eguma's side matched them for urgency and took their chances.

WHAT THIS MEAN

The Stanley Eguma's tutored side will remain on top of the NPFL log after matchday 15 not minding the results from games to be played on Sunday.

WHAT NEXT

An away game to Kano Pillars in Kaduna on Wednesday 2nd March is next for Rivers United but, just as importantly, the Pride of Rivers ended the month of February with a stirring and hugely welcome victory.
